Celebrating Women’s Equality Day, International Men’s Day and attempting to break a Guinness Book of World Record!!

Join us on August 26 bright and early at 12:00am PST until August 28 10:00am PST as we broadcast live from the brand new W2 media centre in Vancouver British Columbia, Canada.  This 55 hour event will in broken into 3 segments and proceeds will go in part to charity including The World is Watching Foundation, a Red Cross initiate spearheaded by Rose Reiter, and Ignite The Road To Justice, a charity raising awareness about serious human trafficking issues in our country lead by Tara Teng, Miss Canada 2011.

We are excited to be broadcasting from the W2 Media Cafe in its new 10,000 square-foot facility which opened in July 2011 in the Atrium of the Woodward’s heritage building at Abbott and Hastings.  Here, they operate an 80-seat social enterprise café, 200-capacity networked broadcasting studio, community TV station, community FM radio station, media lab, creative technology incubator, letterpress studio, telepresence and mobile media programs, and more.
W2 COMMUNITY MEDIA ARTS SOCIETY  W2 was initiated in 2004, and has been growing with the support of a Board of Directors and staff team toward their goal of opening Canada’s first crossmedia centre.

The first part of this event will be a 24 hour show celebrating Women’s Equality Day.  (see history below)  This segment will be 24 hours of all female musicians, D.J’s, speakers and women of note from around the world showcasing their talent and raising awareness for several women’s causes. The line up of speakers and musicians includes Tara Teng – Miss Canada 2011, Rose Reiter, DJ Melanie Sutherland, DJ Melanie Kane, Marlise Kelsey – winner of this years Women of Worth award, Janet Jackson, Jayleen Stonehouse, DJ Jo Daddy, DJ Miss Crazy D, Baby C, Laretta Shelby, YaYoi Winfrey and many more.

This will be followed by another 24 hour show that will be coined “Mans Day”. This segment will highlight men from all over the globe again from music to speakers to men of note.  The line up of speakers and musicians includes Curtis Young (son of Dr Dre, rap artist and producer) Reginald T Dorsey, author John Watts, Sir Elton John, Paul Elder, Russell Monseratte, Charles Wright, and many more.

The final 10 hours will wrap up everything from the previous 48 hours and combine together men and women as they join as one to celebrate the human spirit.

As a side benefit we hope to set 2 new Guinness Book of World records: 1 for woman and 1 for men and then a 3rd, breaking the original Guinness World record for the longest live broadcast.

History of Women’s Equality Day

Women’s Equality Day is a day proclaimed each year by the United States President to commemorate the giving of the vote to women throughout the country on an equal basis to men.
Women in the United States were given the right to vote on August 26, 1920, when the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was certified. The amendment was first introduced many years earlier in 1878. Every president has published a proclamation for Women’s Equality Day since 1971 when legislation was first introduced in Congress by Bella Abzug. This resolution was passed designating August 26 of each year as Women’s Equality Day.
We believe that Women’s Equality is a global event and many other countries have passed similar amendments allowing women all over the world to have a say.  There are still however countries that do not allow equality for women and while celebrating the benefits of what we have here in North America we are also raising awareness for the lack of women’s equality in many countries.

International Men’s Day

International Men’s Day (IMD) is an annual international event celebrated on November 19.  It was inaugurated in 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago, and the day and its events find support from a variety of individuals and groups in Australia, the Caribbean, North America, Asia, Europe, Africa, and the United Nations.

Speaking on behalf of UNESCO, Director of Women and Culture of Peace Ingeborg Breines said of IMD, “This is an excellent idea and would give some gender balance. She added that UNESCO was looking forward to cooperating with the organizers.”
The objectives of celebrating an International Men’s Day include focusing on men’s and boy’s health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting positive male role models.  It is an occasion to highlight discrimination against men and boys and to celebrate their achievements and contributions, in particular for their contributions to community, family, marriage, and child care.
International Men’s Day is celebrated in over 50 countries, including Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Australia, India, China, United States, Singapore, Malta, United Kingdom, South Africa, Hungary, Ireland, Ghana, Canada, Denmark, Austria, France, Pakistan, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, Grenada and Italy, on November 19, and global support for the celebration is broad, global support for the celebration is broad.
